About Don
Don Karisny had a remarkable life journey, filled with accomplishments, dedication, and love for his family. He attended St. Mary's Central High School in Menasha, where he made his mark on the football field. Graduating in 1961, Don's passion for football continued as he played semi-professionally for the Manitowoc Chiefs. His talent and dedication led to his induction into the Hall of Fame in 2002.
Following his high school graduation, Don was drafted into the Army and served with bravery and honor during the Vietnam War as a member of the 54th Signal Battalion. His role as a Specialist Four (E4) involved supporting ground forces and participating in over 25 aerial missions over hostile territory. Don received numerous commendations and honors for his service, including the Air Service Medal.
After returning from his military service, Don pursued higher education at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Throughout his professional career, he held various management and sales positions with Valley School Supply, School Specialty, and Bredford Manufacturing. Don's strong work ethic and commitment to excellence were evident in his professional endeavors.
Outside of work, Don had a passion for golf, both as a player and an enthusiast. He enjoyed spending quality time with his children and grandchildren, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime. Don also had a love for travel and relished in the opportunity to explore new places. Sharing a delicious meal and a glass of red wine with his loved ones brought him great joy.
Don's defining qualities were his unwavering dedication to his family and his exceptional character. He consistently placed his loved ones first, demonstrating his commitment and selflessness. Known for his hard work, resilience, and humility, Don made a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Although Don is deeply missed, his legacy lives on through the memories, love, and admiration of all those fortunate enough to have shared in his life. His remarkable spirit and the values he embodied will continue to inspire and guide us in our own journeys.
Our History
The Don Karisny Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of Donald J. Karisny, a beloved brother, father, grandfather, friend, and patriot. On November 13, 2021, Don Karisny tragically lost his battle against a severe respiratory illness. Throughout his life, Don exemplified qualities of resilience, determination, and a compassionate spirit.
Don was known for his unwavering support, care, and advocacy for others, especially when they needed someone to stand beside them. He possessed an indomitable spirit, never giving up even when faced with overwhelming odds. Don's grit and tenacity allowed him to overcome obstacles. From being an "underdog," he rose to become a true patriot, a loving sibling, a proud and supportive father, a nurturing grandfather, and a dependable friend.
In Spring 2023, the family of Donald J. Karisny established the annual "Underdog" scholarship, specifically intended for high school seniors from either St. Mary's Central Catholic High School (Menasha, WI) or Menasha High School. The scholarship recipient is selected based on their demonstrated ability to overcome significant obstacles or demonstrate acts of kindness. These obstacles could include health challenges, academic hurdles, or family crises.
The scholarship is designed to support the recipient's secondary education, including university, technical/trade school, or other educational pursuits. It is open to students who have displayed strong character, kindness, and empathy towards others. The application process involves a simple form and a short essay.
The Don Karisny Memorial Scholarship seeks to honor Don's legacy by empowering and supporting young individuals who have faced adversity with resilience and kindness. Through this scholarship, we hope to encourage recipients to pursue their dreams, embody the values that Don exemplified, and make a positive impact on their communities.
